Privacy Policy

Effective 20 September 2026 · Applies to the Seya mobile app and this website

Seya is built to work without sending your reading anywhere. Your books, your place in them, and the audio made from them stay on your device. The only data that can leave your device is described below, and two of the three categories are switched off until you turn them on.

The short version

1. Who we are

Seya is developed and published by Yorusei, a sole proprietorship registered in Singapore (UEN 53532320D). For the purposes of the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Yorusei is the data controller for the processing described in this policy.

Contact us about privacy at hello@yorusei.com.

2. What stays on your device

This is the core of how Seya works, and none of it involves us:

Because this information never reaches us, we cannot access it, and we cannot recover it if you lose your device. Removing the app removes this data.

3. Permissions the app asks for

PermissionWhy Seya needs it
Files / media accessTo open the book files you choose to import. Seya only accesses the files you pick.
NotificationsTo show narration playback controls, and to keep audio playing when your screen is off.
Foreground service & wake lockSo narration continues with the screen off and is not interrupted by the system.
Network accessUsed only for ads, subscription checks, and the optional analytics/crash reporting described below. Reading and narration work without it.

You can decline or revoke notification and media permissions in your device settings. Declining them limits the related feature but does not prevent you from reading.

4. Data that can leave your device

4.1 Analytics — off by default

Seya uses Google Firebase Analytics. It is disabled by default and sends nothing until you switch it on in Settings. If you enable it, we receive aggregated, app-level information such as:

These events are designed not to contain personal information, and string values are truncated before they are logged. Firebase may also associate a randomly generated app-instance identifier and general device and country information with these events. We do not use analytics to build a profile of you, and we do not sell it.

Legal basis (GDPR): your consent, which you may withdraw at any time in Settings.

4.2 Crash reports — off by default

Seya uses Google Firebase Crashlytics to learn about crashes. It is disabled by default and is also inactive in development builds. If you enable it, we receive a technical report when the app crashes or hits an error, which can include the error type, a stack trace, the app version, device model and operating system version, and short diagnostic breadcrumbs.

We do not attach your name, email address, or the contents of your books to crash reports.

Legal basis (GDPR): your consent, which you may withdraw at any time in Settings.

4.3 Advertising — Google AdMob

The free version of Seya shows ads supplied by Google AdMob: a banner, and optional rewarded ads you may choose to watch to unlock premium voices temporarily or to remove banners for a period. Seya Plus removes banner ads.

To serve ads, Google and its partners may collect and process your device's advertising identifier, IP address, and information about ad interactions. This may be used to show personalised advertising and to measure performance. This processing is carried out by Google as an independent controller; see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, Seya asks for your consent through Google's User Messaging Platform before any ad is requested. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time via Settings → Ad Privacy Options. If you decline, ads are not served on a personalised basis.

Legal basis (GDPR): consent for personalised advertising and related storage; legitimate interests for the limited processing needed to serve non-personalised ads, prevent fraud, and keep the service secure.

US state privacy laws: we do not sell personal information for money. Where a US state law treats personalised advertising as a "sale" or "sharing", you can opt out using the consent choices presented in the app.

4.4 Subscriptions and purchases

Seya Plus subscriptions and the short-term pass are sold through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Payment is handled entirely by Apple or Google — we never receive your name, card number, or billing address.

We use Qonversion to validate purchase receipts and to tell the app whether your subscription is active. Qonversion receives a purchase receipt and an anonymous app user identifier, not your payment details. Apple and Google each act as a controller for the payment data they process; see their respective privacy policies.

Legal basis (GDPR): performance of a contract (providing the subscription you purchased) and our legitimate interest in preventing fraud and entitlement abuse.

5. Who we share data with

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the service providers needed to run the features above:

ProviderPurposeData
Google (Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics)Optional analytics and crash reportingApp usage events, diagnostics, app-instance ID
Google (AdMob)AdvertisingAdvertising ID, IP address, ad interactions
Apple App Store / Google PlayPayment and subscription managementPurchase and payment data (not shared with us)

We may also disclose information where we are legally required to do so, or to establish or defend legal claims.

6. International transfers

The providers above are based in the United States and elsewhere. Where personal data from the EEA or UK is transferred outside those regions, the transfer relies on the safeguards those providers have put in place, including the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses and, where applicable, the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

7. How long we keep data

8. Your rights

If you are in the EEA, UK or Switzerland, you have the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal data, to object to processing, to receive your data in a portable format, and to withdraw consent at any time. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

If you are in California or another US state with a comprehensive privacy law, you have rights of access, deletion, correction, and to opt out of certain uses, and a right not to be discriminated against for exercising them.

To exercise any of these rights, email hello@yorusei.com. Because Seya has no account system, we may not be able to identify data as yours — in many cases the honest answer is that we hold nothing that identifies you, and the data you care about is on your own device, which you control directly.

9. Children

Seya is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. The app is not tagged as child-directed in either store.

10. Security

Book files, reading progress and preferences are stored in the app's private storage area on your device, protected by your operating system's app sandboxing. Data sent to the providers above is transmitted over encrypted connections. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

11. Automated decision-making

We do not use your personal data for automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects.

12. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Continuing to use Seya after a change means you accept the updated policy.
